The original cedar-clad Pontoonz houseboat on an 8.1 metre twin hull

Our first build, 2003: a cedar-clad shed on an 8.1m twin hull. It's still afloat.

How Pontoonz Works

Pods in, hull done. The rest is up to you.

Every Pontoonz build starts the same way. Choose the pod type for the job, decide how long and wide the hull needs to be, bolt the pods together using the moulded tie-off points. Build a deck straight onto the pods with timber runners and joists, drilled and bolted. From there it's a houseboat, a pump platform, a jetty or a work barge. Same pods, different top.

  • Six pod types, each rated for a specific job
  • Any hull length or width, and you can add pods later
  • Cut, drill and bolt. No fibreglass, no welding, no marine trade required
  • Load ratings published for every pod, so you can size the build before you call

Why Pontoonz

The pontoon system the professionals chose

When SailGP and the America's Cup needed marker boats that could take a beating in any harbour in the world, they chose Pontoonz pods.

Proven at the Top

Marker boats and buoys for every SailGP regatta since 2018 and the 2017 and 2024 America's Cup.

Built to Last

Rotomoulded, marine-grade, UV-stabilised polyethylene with a 5 to 7mm wall. 15+ year life, no antifoul, no fuel leak risk from the float.

Any Size You Want

Pods bolt into a hull of any length and width. Add pods later as the project grows.

One System, Every Job

The same pods build a houseboat, a pump barge, a jetty and a swim raft. No other system in New Zealand or Australia does that.

Genuinely DIY

Cut, drill and bolt. The first Pontoonz houseboat was a garden shed on pods. It's still afloat.

Made in NZ, Shipped Direct

Designed in New Zealand and contract-moulded in Auckland since 2004. Delivered to Australia, the Pacific and beyond. 5,000+ pods and counting.

FAQs

Common questions about building with pods

Short answers to what most people ask first. The full list covers consents, colours, saltwater use and more.

Do I need boat-building skills?

No. The pods bolt together using the moulded tie-off points, and the deck is timber runners and joists, drilled and bolted straight onto the pods. If you can build a deck, you can build a Pontoonz. The construction guide covers the rest, and we're a phone call away.

How much weight will the pods carry?

Main Boat Pods and Walk Pods carry 150kg each at half immersion. Main Boat Pods carry up to 350kg fully immersed. Raft Pods carry 60kg and Float Pods 40kg each. Use the calculator to size your build, then we check it before quoting.

How much does it cost?

Main Boat Pods are NZ$560 each ex GST, Bow Pods from NZ$450, Walk Pods NZ$550, Float Pods NZ$135 including all fittings. A 6m twin-hull pontoon boat platform starts from NZ$5,380 in pods; an 8.1m houseboat platform from NZ$7,620. Volume breaks apply on larger orders. Freight is quoted to your address. Full pricing is on the Pods & Pricing page.

Can I put a motor on it?

Yes. Main Boat Pods with Bow or Speed Pods are designed for motorised use. The 8.1m cedar-clad houseboat runs a 9.9hp four-stroke high-thrust outboard. The Speed Pod gives a sharper entry for faster hulls.

Do you ship to Australia and the Pacific?

Yes, direct from Auckland to every Australian state and across the Pacific Islands. Every quote includes freight to your address or nearest port. Tell us your city or port in the form and we'll quote it.

How long will the pods last?

More than 15 years. Rotomoulded, marine-grade, UV-stabilised polyethylene, no antifoul needed, an annual water blast is the only maintenance. The first Pontoonz houseboat from 2003 is still afloat.
